Mike Welter had no idea what he was in for when he volunteered to help out at the annual Lee County Pickleball championship.
Five years later, the 61-year-old has traveled the country playing in tournaments and proudly holds Florida and South Dakota state pickleball titles in his age group.
“I’ll tell you one thing, it’s addicting,” said Welter, who has competed in tournaments in Arizona, New York, South Dakota, South Carolina and Florida. “I took one class, hung around and beat the instructor. I have been playing ever since.”
