The Golden Isles Pickleball Society (GIPS), founded last year in Darien, recently participated in a pickleball tournament in St. Marys/Kingsland. The inaugural event attracted nearly 50 players from Fernandina Beach, Fla., to Athens.
The Camden County Leisure Services Department recently converted two of its tennis courts into four permanent pickleball courts, allowing more players to play at the same facility, making for a larger tournament. The one-day event included a catered lunch and a holiday food bank drive.
Winners included Tonya Lam and Nood Lawler, both of Darien, in the beginner ladies championship; Charon Sharp and Emily Rudow, both of St. Simons Island, in the intermediate ladies championship; and JT Tolbert of St. Simons in the intermediate men’s championship. Charlie Crawley of St. Simons and Marshall Hogue of Brunswick won second place in the intermediate men’s division, while Randy Rogers of Shellman Bluff and Carly Hardy of Darien placed second in the mixed doubles open.
