100-year-old man a star on the Pickleball court

www.11alive.com

ATLANTA -- Most centenarians would be on the sidelines. Not Sid Cojac. The 100-year-old man is on the pickleball court twice a week.

In fact, Sid brought his favorite sport to the Marcus Jewish Community Center a few years ago.

"I had a devil of a time getting it started," he said.

No one had heard of it. Now 100 members have the same enthusiasm for a sport that's a bit tennis, table tennis and badminton all in one. And no, there is no pickle.

While the game is popular with seniors, interest crosses generations.

The name may sound a little strange to those unfamiliar with the sport, offering up some interesting images of what actually takes place during a game, but it's surprisingly "normal" and extremely competitive.

The sport is internationally known and extremely popular in the retirement community. Rumor has it that Tony Horn, a somewhat local who brought the game to Huntsville, named it after his dog, Pickle.

Pickleball makes a racket locally at recreation level

June 5, 2014 - www.times-herald.com

When Fred Fahy introduced the racquet sport of pickleball to Coweta County just a little more than five months ago, he wasn’t really sure how it would go over.

After all, very few had ever heard of the sport that was first played in the 1960s, let alone tried it.

It didn’t take a very lengthy sales pitch, however, for Fahy, who first played the game in Florida, to win over a new collection of pickleball players.

Now, it has become a weekly obsession for some, with as many as 15 players of all ages and abilities gathering each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon to play on one of the two courts laid out inside the Coweta County Recreation Department Gym on Hospital Drive.

Pickleball a dilly of a rec sport

May 31, 2014 - www.floridatoday.com

Pickleball is a sport that's gaining in popularity in Brevard.

"Well, it's grown substantially," said Scott Nelson, United States Pickleball Association (USAPA) ambassador for the Space Coast. "It's probably equal on the Space Coast as it is throughout the country. ... It's the fastest-growing sport in the country for a lot of different reasons."

Although people of all ages have played the sport locally, those over 50 have particularly flocked to the sport, which involves a good deal of physical activity, but isn't as hard on the body as tennis and racquetball.
