Gulf Breeze latest to tackle Pickleball

Published July 30, 2014 - www.pnj.com

Sure, I snickered when the bosses assigned me a story on Pickleball, a racquet game described as a cross between badminton, tennis and ping pong.

And yes, I rolled my eyes when I was told that the fast-growing, goofy-named game is really, really popular among the 50-plus set.

"There are 104 Pickleball courts in the Villages," one player said, referring to the mammoth retirement Shangri-la near Ocala.

Yay, I thought. This is going to be as exciting as shuffleboard or four-square. And just as fast.

Then I went to the Gulf Breeze Community Center and played a few games with some of the more experienced Pickleball players.

I'm not snickering now.

Pickleball Social Night growing in popularity at city recreation centers

Published July 30, 2014 - www.pineapplenewspaper.com

The Pickleball craze combining the best of badminton, racquetball and tennis is becoming popular for residents of all ages and abilities at Pompey Park Recreation Center and Delray Beach Community Center. Pickleball is a fun and active racquet game. The game can be played indoors or outdoors and is traditionally played on a badminton size court with a net similar to what’s found in tennis but lowered to just under 3 feet. Pickleball players use a wooden paddle or hard plastic paddle to hit a ball similar to a plastic wiffle ball, serve underhand and allow the ball to bounce once on the opposing player’s side before being returned.

“The Pickleball at Pompey Park is great because it’s social open play matching up players of all skill levels. We have four courts of games playing simultaneously,” said Delray Beach resident and Pickleball aficionado Merrill Beveridge.

Beveridge compares the game to tennis but said it’s less strenuous on her body. She said the court is about one-third the size of a tennis court and that games are played to 11 points with the winner having to win by two.

Social Pickleball Night is currently held Pompey Park Recreation Center, 1102 NW Second St., while summer camps are in session. Cost is free at this time. Starting August 18, Pickleball will move to a timeslot from 8-11a.m., Monday to Friday at Pompey Park. On August 23, a Saturday 1-4p.m. Pickleball schedule will also open at Pompey Park. Players can bring their own Pickleball racquet or one will be provided by staff.

Cary will build pickleball courts in White Oak Park

Published July 24, 2014 - www.carynews.com

CARY — Four players stood in the gymnasium of the Brier Creek Community Center in Raleigh, equipped with large paddles and a neon ball as holey as Swiss cheese.

The players lobbed the ball back and forth over a net. They carefully avoided the “kitchen,” a small rectangle near the net that’s off limits.

Was this a large-scale game of ping pong or a weird form of badminton? Maybe some sort of tennis match?

Nope, it was pickleball.

Pickleball: Grant growing the sport on the Grand Strand

www.wmbfnews.com

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Lifelong tennis player turned "Pickleballer" Rena Grant turned her love for the racket into a five-days-a-week obsession.

"Most every time when you mention Pickleball to someone, they'll turn up your nose," said Rena Grant, Pickleball Ambassador of Myrtle Beach. "What is 'Pickleball' and so you have to explain to them what Pickleball is."

Pickleball is a growing sport on the Grand Strand that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.

According to the USA Pickleball Association website, pickleball was created in 1965 near Seattle as a backyard game for all ages.

The USAPA estimates there are now over 100,000 players actively playing Pickleball, and the Pickleball Ambassador for Myrtle Beach, Grant, is determined to add to that number one person at a time.

Pickleball picks up fans at SummerGlen

www.ocala.com

The Pickle Pounders relished a big victory as they took top honors in the SummerGlen Pickleball Club Fun Days Tournament three-day series that wrapped up Thursday night.

"It's amazing everyone stayed, even with the rain delays," said team member Mike Field, as things wound down in the 84-game series.

Pickleball is gaining popularity at the SummerGlen community south of Ocala, just as it has been sweeping the nation, according to the USA Pickleball Association, which is based in Surprise, Arizona.

Ruth Rosenquist, in media relations with the association, said the name of the game is possibly either for the founder's ball-retrieving dog named Pickles or a type of boat popular in Washington state, where the game started.

St. Johns County's fastest-growing activity a lesser known sport

July 14, 2014 - www.staugustine.com

One of St. Johns County’s fastest-growing activities is a sport that many have never heard of or seen played.

But that could change, as more and more locals continue to take an interest in pickleball — a game that is similar to tennis but played with a smaller racket and a wiffleball on a court closer in size to that used in badminton.

“It’s a sport for all ages,” said Bob Dean, a pickleball ambassador for the state of Florida. “I have people playing pickleball anywhere from the age of 5 to your death, you know? This is one sport that you can play forever. It’s like a lifetime sport.”

Published July 13, 2014 - www.fayobserver.com - By Deuce Niven Correspondent

TABOR CITY - Rena Grant has traveled far and seen a lot since her birth on a Tabor City area farm nine decades ago.

Active and fit, now living in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, after spending most of her life in Pennsylvania, Grant wants to introduce pickleball to her home town, possibly this fall.

For most, introductions are in order, though Grant says the sport - a combination of badminton, tennis and pingpong - is "the fastest-growing sport on the planet."

"Two senators from Washington state came up with it," Grant said. "It was named after a dog named Pickles."

Earleys continue pickleball tutelage

www.cherokeetribune.com

While interest in pickleball, a racket sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis, is growing throughout Cherokee County, one couple is catering to the intermediate and advanced players.

Tom and Ann Earley, who began playing pickleball while traveling to Arizona, fell in love with the game and brought it back to their home in the Macedonia community of Canton eight years ago.

The Earleys had a pair of tennis courts on their property, but resurfaced them to create six pickleball courts in 2013. The courts are in use by regular players in the North Georgia Pickleball Club every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday morning.

Pickle ball players took advantage of a cool 4th of July

www.wakeforesttoday.com

WAKE FOREST, NC – July 8, 2014 – Pickle Ball gives you a great workout, but isn't as taxing on the knees as tennis, says Jerry McInnes, a member of a loosely-knit group fo approximately 65 Wake County area pickle ball players.
The sport appeals to older adults who still enjoy the camaraderie of playing racket sports but don't have the desire to run around the tennis courts.
About 15 players brought out their lawn chairs and coolers for a long morning of fun on July $.
The Town of Wake Forest has seen a surge in interest in playing pickle ball addressing the burgeoning sport by creating pickle ball courts at Flaherty which share space with two back tennis courts. According to a town press release, "As part of an ongoing effort to upgrade its existing facilities, the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources (PRCR) Department also added eight pickle ball courts on two of the tennis courts."
