When Rosalie Sones moved to Solivita, an active adult retirement community in Poinciana, she wanted to be part of an activity that didn't sound old.
Shuffleboard sounded old to me," she said.
So instead she began playing pickleball.
"Pickleball is a cross between tennis, badminton and pingpong," said Polk Senior Games Director Deena Wilbur. Played on a court the size of a badminton court, it requires a 3-foot high net, pingpong paddles, and a perforated ball the size of a football.
"The holes in the ball slow it down," said Ron Farra, media relations officer for the USA Pickleball Association. He called pickleball a slowed-down version of tennis.
Pickleball is played in several communities in Polk County, including Deer Creek RV Golf Resort in Davenport, The Hamptons in Auburndale and Solivita in Poinciana. At Solivita, pickleball has grown so popular that it is the largest club sport there. More than 200 men and women participate in The Smashers, Solivita's pickleball club, of which Sones is a member.
